Grant Links Provides a listing of private or corporate foundations that provide funding in certain categories (education, art, etc). Pay attention to the descriptions—some foundations only fund entities located in certain geographic regions. This site requires registration (which is free) and you can access information on funding organizations. If you hear of a funding organization and want to find out more about it, use Guide Star. The site contains some information on all organizations required to file a 990 tax return (the nonprofit tax return). Looking at the organization's tax return will give you an idea of the assets (does it have the capacity to fund your project?), if it accepts proposals (some don't—it may have its own selection process), board members (you may know of someone on the board), and a list of grants it has awarded (to see if your project fits the trend). Keep in mind the 990 tax return may be a year or two old—so it may not always reflect current funder policies. You can access information on funding sources for specific causes. This site contains some of the same information contained on fee-based sites (Foundation Center Online costs money to access its data-base), and you have to do a bit more digging to get some of the same information. A good site to browse if you want to find organizations that have funded educational or art or technology programs in our state. Provides a great overview of grant process, includes examples of previously funded grants, links to other organizations and funding sources. |
